Does reverse osmosis waste a lot of water?

Does RO remove healthy minerals?

RO removes most everything, including minerals. Plenty of people prefer that — the cleanest possible water — and you get your minerals from food anyway. If you want minerals back in, we can add a remineralizing stage. Your call.

Do I need RO if I already have a whole-home filter?

They do different jobs. A whole-home filter cleans every tap and shower; RO is the finishing step that gives you bottled-quality drinking water at the sink. Many families do both. The test helps you decide what your home needs.

The Cause

How reverse osmosis actually works

RO uses pressure to push water through a membrane with pores so small that dissolved solids — chlorine, chloramine, lead, fluoride, and a wide range of other contaminants — can't follow the water through. A typical under-sink system has multiple stages: a sediment pre-filter, a carbon block for chlorine, the RO membrane itself, and a polish filter before the dedicated faucet and storage tank.
